Dr. Brookhart is a biostatistician and epidemiologist with over ten years experience as a heath care researcher. Dr. Brookhart currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) Gillings School of Global Public Health as well as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UNC-CH School of Medicine. Among his other notable past positions, Dr. Brookhart has served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard University’s School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, Dr. Brookhart has been an expert consultant for the World Health Organization, the University of British Columbia at Vancouver Therapeutics Initiative, McKesson Health Solutions, the Chronic Disease Research Group in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the World Health Information Science Consultants, and Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research. Furthermore, he is a member of the Interfaculty Initiative on Medications and Society at Harvard University, a fellow of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and chair of the RxAnte, Inc. Scientific Advisory Board. Moreover, Dr. Brookhart maintains active membership in numerous professional organizations including, but not limited to, the American College of Epidemiology, American Society of Nephrology, American Statistical Association, and the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.

Dr. Brookhart has substantial experience researching the development and application of epidemiological methods for observational studies of pharmacotherapies using large health care databases, focusing in particular on understanding the determinants of physician prescribing and patient adherence and detecting and controlling confounding bias in comparative effectiveness studies. Research investigations in which Dr. Brookhart has served as the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, CVS Caremark, Harvard Catalyst, Amgen, Research Triangle Institute, and Satellite Healthcare, to name a few.

Throughout his academic tenure, Dr. Brookhart has served as an editorial board member for Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, a statistical editor for Circulation, and as a peer-reviewer for multiple journal publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Journal of Kidney Disease, Kidney International, Circulation, Statistical Applications in Genetics and Molecular Biology, the British Medical Journal, and the American Journal of Epidemiology. Dr. Brookhart’s research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed articles published in highly credible and visible journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Archives of Internal Medicine, the American Journal of Epidemiology, Health Affairs, Drugs, Medical Care, Arthritis Care Research, Value in Health, the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Contemporary Clinical Trials, the American Journal of Kidney Disease, Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, Bone, Arthritis & Rheumatism, the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the American Journal of Managed Care, Epidemiology, the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, the American Heart Journal, Circulation, and many others. In addition, Dr. Brookhart has delivered numerous invited presentations at local, national, and international forums including the International Society of Clinical Biostatistics, the Amgen Center for Observational Research, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Joint Statistical Meeting, Pfizer, the Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop, and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Brookhart received his Doctor of Philosophy degree and his Master of Arts in biostatistics from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition, he completed his Master of Applied Mathematical Sciences from the University of Georgia and his Bachelor of Arts degree from UNC-CH.
