Dr. Hornby is a professional with more than fifteen years of experience in the health care field, with specific focus in the areas of neurophysiology and rehabilitation. He currently holds multiple professional positions including Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Adjunct Research Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL; Research Scientist and Director of the Locomotor Recovery Laboratory, Sensory Motor Performance Program at Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; and Director of Research for the Neurology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Throughout his professional tenure, Dr. Hornby has served as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for numerous research studies focusing on physical injuries and rehabilitation. Dr. Hornby’s research has been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institutes on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the Department of Defense (DoD), the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

As a testament to his dedication to advancing research in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Hornby has authored more than 100 publications including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and scientific abstracts. His research has been featured in highly regarded journals such as the Stroke, Journal of Neurotrauma, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, Journal of Physiology, Journal of Neurophysiology, Physical Therapy, and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, to name a few. Dr. Hornby has also conducted numerous educational workshops and has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally on topics related to locomotor recovery secondary to neurologic injuries.

In recognition of his impressive achievements, Dr. Hornby has been the recipient of scientific awards and honors such as the Excellence in Research in Neurological Physical Therapy Award from the American Physical Therapy Association, the Advance for Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: Innovation in Rehabilitation Award; and the teaching and service awards from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Dr. Hornby received his Doctor of Philosophy in Physiological Sciences from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. He also earned his Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA as well as a Bachelor of Science in Physiological Sciences from the University of California at Los Angeles.
