Dr. James Avery is a physician with more than 25 years of experience in the medical and hospice care field. He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Avery has served in several notable professional capacities, including Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Golden Living; Senior Medical Director of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care; Assistant Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Medical Director at the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast Largo; and as an Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Specialist at the Diagnostic Clinic in Clearwater, Florida in a multi-pecialty group setting as well as in solo practice. He is board certified from the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Pulmonary Medicine, and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Avery is a published scholar in journals such as Home Healthcare Nurse, the Florida Medical Association Quarterly Journal, the American Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, the American Review of Respiratory Diseases, and Hospital Physician in addition to other newsletters and reports. His publications discuss topics ranging from communication with hospice care patients, hospice emergencies, ethical issues in the management of geriatric patients, pleural effusion, and the use of oxygen masks.

Notable professional memberships for Dr. Avery include the American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care, American Medical Association, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Dr. Avery has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and honors including the Roger C. Bone Leadership Award in End-of-Life Care by the American College of Chest Physicians and the Lillian B. Wald Award for Healthcare Excellence in New York City. In addition, Dr. Avery has been named “One of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives” by Modern Physician magazine and was nominated as “One of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” by Modern HealthCare magazine.

Dr. Avery received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Florida College of Medicine and his Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from SUNY Stony Brook. He also completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship from the University of South Florida in addition to his internal medicine residency at Northwestern University Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois.
